I wanted a big font on my xterm in order to do a presentation. My laptop is a PowerBook. Unlike Linux, The X server on OSX only handles bitmap.
I compiled otf2bdf and downloaded the Inconsolata true type font. I then ran the following script to create a 30 point bitmap font:
otf2bdf -p 30 Inconsolata.otf > inconsolata.bdf bdftopcf -o inconsolata.pcf inconsolata.bdf rm inconsolata.pcf.gz gzip inconsolata.pcf sudo cp inconsolata.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc xset fp rehash
I ran the following as root to register the font:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc mkfontdir . xset fp rehash
I can now open up xterm with the font generated. I changed the point size in the above script till xterm took the entire width of my screen.
xterm -fn '-freetype-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'
As you can see the result is not perfect. It must be a bug in the conversion program but it's good enough for a presentation.
